We often receive requests for textured, contrasting materials to be installed on stair nosings to increase visibility and minimise the risk of falls. We usually receive these requests for older buildings that may have concreted or tiled stairs. When walking down the stairs it can be very difficult to see where the edge of each step is, which presents a slips and falls hazard.
Many newer buildings have step treads installed at the edge of the each step, making them easier to see and grip when walking up or down. They are also easily replaceable if chipped or worn by heavy traffic or moving furniture etc.
In some lighting, the contrast between the edge of the step and the step below can be difficult to see. It is possible to retrofit step treads to an existing concreted or tiled stairway, and there are also other solutions available. Alternative solutions can include textured paint, tape, and aluminum or fiberglass nosings. We’ve worked with all of these options.
Each have their unique advantages and applications. For example, permanent aluminium strips have the advantage of being non-slip even when wet.
Non-slip tape is available in multiple colours including yellow, grey and terracotta as well as luminescent colours to help in low light conditions. We can advise on the best products and options for your specific needs
