Water Damaged Doors

If I had a dollar for every external door I have replaced due to water damage I could retire.

It’s an issue we see often, a door that absorbed water from an unsealed bottom edge.

The issue is that carpenters fit the door and then the door is painted which can lead to water damage.

If you’re buying a new door, read the sticker on the side – it says you must seal the door on all edges in order to have the door warranted.

Some other issues can arise from the use of acrylic or water based enamel to paint the doors. Even though it takes a bit longer to dry, oil based enamel is still the best paint for doors and windows because it dries hard and is more resistant to wear. Acrylic paint never really dries properly underneath and stays flexible. Great for the external walls of your house but not so great for windows and doors. If your windows or doors stick, it could likely be due to acrylic paint.
